Environmental Policy

Your hosts have had a long standing proactive policy to energy conversation, recycling and sustainability. It is our objective during 2007 to achieve carbon neutral status.

This will be achieved by a vigorous reduction in our consumption of carbon based energy, tree planting and offsetting.

Orchard House has been insulated to the highest possible standard and double glazed windows are used throughout (with the exception of the stained glass windows).

Heating is by a natural gas condensing boiler and a multifuel stove in which we burn wind blown timber from local woodlands.

In time we intend to introduce geothermal heat pumps to further reduce our carbon emissions.

All food is sourced as far as is practicably possible from local suppliers who will almost always be organic producers and conform to strict animal welfare standards.

The honey at your breakfast is from bee hives a couple of hundred yards from Orchard House.

Living in the country car use is essential but we do provide information to our guests on local public transport into Edinburgh and particularly several Park and Ride locations.

We are privileged to be living in such beautiful countryside and provide information for our guests to on the many tracks and woodland paths immediately around us. Rosslyn Chapel is barely 15 minutes walk through Roslin Glen a nature reserve containing some of the remnants of the ancient Caledonian Forest which at one time blanketed Scotland.

Archie Hunter has for twenty years been supplying recycled locally sourced organic waste to gardeners throughout Edinburgh. This business is also aiming for carbon neutral status.
